How does it work? The platform is basically a network of journalists mutually helping each other by using a combination of ‘Couchsurfing’ and ‘Story-research assistance’. Members of the platform would offer either free sleeping accommodation or free assistance in story-researching, or both. They, in their turn, would be entitled to receive free identical or equal favors from other members. For example: a journalist researching a story in country X would contact a local journalist, member of the platform, who is willing to host and aid the foreign colleague. The local reporter would welcome his guest, help him find his way around, introduce him to the right contacts, explain local customs and put him up on the couch of his living room. Back home, the journalist would reciprocate in the same way by hosting and assisting other members of the platform. Or maybe the two colleagues join forces and write the story altogether!
hostwriter.org was founded in September 2013 by the German journalists Tamara Anthony, Tabea Grzeszyk and Sandra Zistl. It’s the brainchild of ‘journalists.network’, a German-based non-profit organization that brings together young journalists from leading print and electronic media outlets in Germany and abroad.
