• Eltingmöbel

We started with the idea of using urban ressources such as bulky waste to design and build furniture from. Thereby we got in touch with participatory design and urban production an would now like to develop a MakerSpace for urban Design and district production.

In an application for a residency scholarship by Vonovia and the cultural bureau of the city of essen, we came up with the idea of designing new ways of handling the bulky waste in Essens Eltingviertel. During this process, we developed a pluggable stool that is completely made of Eltingviertel bulky waste.
We already cooperate with wfbm Duisburg and have the stool produced in a small number of pieces. Presenting it on various Faires and exhibitions, we often were asked, wether the stool can be copied by an ordinary person. We took this as an occasion to deal more deeply with participatory design in our industrial design studies at folkwang university of the arts. In this context, as well as through our increasing interest in urban production, we started giving workshops for self-making, for example with Fraunhofer UMSICHT and the Institute for Work and Technics Gelsenkirchen. This is why we came up with the idea of a city-district-factory. It is some kind of a MakerSpace which combines handcraft with modern fabrication methods such as 3d printing or CNC milling and can be a spot for both research and education as well as for small batch production and distribution. In this context we would like to collaborate with citizens, facilities such as schools, institutes and universities, and also companies.
